Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side face a stern test of character as they travel to Lisbon for a Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting on Tuesday, April 7.
The Gunners are reeling from a shocking 2-1 defeat to Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, a fortnight after losing 2-0 to Manchester City in the League Cup final. This marks the first time Arsenal have suffered back-to-back defeats this season, effectively ending their unprecedented quadruple dream.
The recent slump has left Arsenal’s long-suffering fanbase questioning the club’s ability to finally secure silverware. Despite three consecutive Premier League runner-up finishes and no major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, Arteta remains confident in his squad.
“In the season, you always have moments, normally two or three. This is the first moment that we have with a certain level of difficulty,” Arteta stated, adding, “If this is a difficult period, I believe there are many other ones that are much more difficult, so let’s stand up, make yourself comfortable and deliver like we’ve been doing all season.”
Arsenal’s position remains strong, with a nine-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League and travelling to Lisbon as favourites. Arteta passionately defended his players, saying, “I love my players. What they have done for nine months, I’m not going to criticise them because we lost a game in the manner that they are putting their bodies through everything. I’m going to defend them more than ever. Someone has to take responsibility. That’s me and we have the most beautiful period of the season ahead of us.”
The Gunners will draw confidence from their dominant 5-1 victory over Sporting in last season’s Champions League group stage. Striker Viktor Gyokeres, who played for Sporting at the time, has found his form for Arsenal recently, scoring against Southampton and netting twice in the North London derby. However, injuries threaten to derail their double bid, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka in a race against time to be fit, and Gabriel Magalhaes also a doubt.
Midfielder Christian Norgaard emphasised the need for positivity: “Now is not the time to go with our heads down for too long… we also have to look forward because there are so many big games coming up for this club.”
