Uganda’s King Oyo Nyimba, who ascended the throne at the age of three and went on to serve as the cultural leader of the Tooro Kingdom for nearly three decades, has died. He was 34.

The monarch died at about 10pm local time on Thursday, according to the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.

The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed.

Earlier, Uganda’s State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, had said the king was receiving medical treatment in the United States.

Oyo Nyimba became king following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

He was formally crowned on September 12, 1995, becoming one of the youngest monarchs in the world and beginning a reign that would span almost three decades.

The late monarch was the traditional ruler of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uganda operates as a republic under an elected president but retains several traditional kingdoms, whose roles are largely cultural and symbolic. The monarchs play significant roles in preserving the traditions, cultural heritage and identity of their respective communities.

Announcing Oyo Nyimba’s death in a post on X, Akiiki expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the monarch.

Tributes have since poured in from political figures, cultural leaders and members of the public across the country.

Opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine described the monarch’s death as devastating and offered prayers for his soul in a message shared on X.

Akiiki also disclosed that the late king had left behind an heir, assuring the people of Tooro that the royal succession would continue.

In a birthday message to Oyo Nyimba in April, Akiiki had described him as a young monarch who remained closely connected to the realities of his people, adding that his youth brought energy and a fresh perspective to the kingdom.

His death brings to an end a reign spanning nearly three decades, during which he served as the cultural figurehead of the Tooro Kingdom for most of his life.
