Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives, has highlighted what he called a tenure defined by people-centered governance, legislative impact, and grassroots development in his two years in office.

In a statement commemorating his second anniversary in office, Ugochinyere declared that his performance so far was just the beginning of what he described as “a reference point for people-oriented representation.”

Since assuming office in June 2023, the outspoken lawmaker has embarked on a range of developmental projects, including the completion of 25 solar-powered water boreholes across remote communities, which he said were already serving more than 50,000 residents. The communities that have benefited included Umuojiosi Isiekenesie, Umuchoke, Umuopia, Umuezemazu Urualla, Ndiuche, Umueshi, Ekulieaka, Ntueke, Akwu, and Ozuakoli, among others.

“I prioritised basic amenities,” Ugochinyere said. “These projects already serve over 50,000 residents.”

In the area of education, the lawmaker revealed that 10 schools have been rehabilitated with upgraded facilities and learning environments. Among the benefitting institutions were County School, Akokwa; Comprehensive Secondary School, Umumaisiaku (laboratory block); Technical School, Umuokwara Akokwa; and Central Schools in Arondizuogu, Uzii, and Umuaghobe.

Furthermore, Ugochinyere stated that over 2,000 solar streetlights have been installed in high-traffic and vulnerable areas such as St. Aloysius Catholic Church Road, Orie Umuobom Market, and Osina Market, significantly boosting security and nighttime commerce in the region.

He also pointed to the empowerment of 230 students through the Ikenga Imo Annual Scholarship Exam with beneficiaries drawn from the primary to tertiary levels, 100 in 2023 and 130 in 2024.

In the area of economic development, the lawmaker disclosed that he reconstructed the Afor Urualla Market, erecting 30 open shades to support over 500 traders and vendors. He also noted that 66 local farmers were trained between 2023 and 2024 to enhance food production and rural income.

As part of his legislative work, Ugochinyere announced the sponsorship of over 40 key Bills, including one advocating for the creation of Orlu State from present Imo State and another proposing a single six-year presidential term with rotational zoning. He said these Bills are currently at various stages of consideration in the National Assembly.

“As Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources,” Ugochinyere added, “I have also sponsored several motions, including calls for the rehabilitation of major roads like Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Akokwa-Arondizuogu and Akokwa-Umuchima-Mgbe-Orlu federal roads, as well as investigations into arbitrary fuel price hikes.”

While many of the physical projects are already in use, the lawmaker said formal commissioning ceremonies will take place in 2026.

“These are just to mention but a few,” he concluded. “And I’m just getting started. I vow to make my tenure a reference point for people-oriented representation.”

The lawmaker’s achievements have been lauded by constituents and observers alike, especially in a time where demands for accountability and delivery are high among Nigeria’s elected representatives.
