No fewer than 25 people lost their lives and 20 others sustained injuries in a strike on a market in the Russian-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine
Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-installed leader of the Donetsk region, confirmed the toll on Sunday, stating on Telegram, “At the moment, information about 25 dead has been confirmed. At least 20 more people have been injured.”
Initial reports had suggested that a Ukrainian strike targeted the market, leading to the loss of at least 18 lives and 13 injuries, according to.
The strike occurred in Donetsk, which has been under partial control by Russian forces or their proxies since 2014.
The Donetsk region, which Moscow claimed to have annexed in 2022, has been a focal point of conflict, with Ukrainian forces regularly bombarding the city located around 20 kilometres from the frontline.
Pushilin, referring to the incident, stated, “The market was attacked on Sunday when it is busiest,” stressing the severity of the situation.
The Moscow-installed leader said that the toll could increase as more information was being gathered about the casualties.
