President Bola Tinubu has described Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, veteran journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper who is fondly called Uncle Sam, as the doyen of Nigerian journalism and a national treasure.

In a statement personally written by him, President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the nonagenarian, popularly known as ‘Uncle Sam,’ hailing his life-long dedication to journalism and nation-building as the revered media icon marks his 90th birthday on Friday, June 13, 2025.

“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday,” President Tinubu said. “Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience, and integrity within the media industry. He is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen.”

Amuka-Pemu began his journalism career at Daily Times before co-founding The Punch with the late Chief Olu Aboderin. After their paths diverged, he established Vanguard in 1984, a publication that under his leadership has grown into one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers.

“Mr. Amuka-Pemu has devoted most of his life to journalism,” the President noted. “It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry.”

Beyond journalism, President Tinubu highlighted the role of Amuka-Pemu as a respected elder statesman, especially in his native Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone, where his leadership continues to inspire younger generations.

Recalling the recent Democracy Day celebrations, President Tinubu said the government had conferred on Amuka-Pemu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition of his significant contributions to the media and the nation at large.

“I urge younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader,” Tinubu added. “Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy.”

The President wished the veteran journalist “continued God’s grace and more years of impact,” affirming that Nigeria remains indebted to ‘Uncle Sam’ for his unwavering commitment to truth and nation-building.
