The acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Professor Patricia Manko Lar, has pledged to ensure a transparent and inclusive process in selecting the institution’s next substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The development followed a turbulent period in the university’s leadership, which saw the dismissal of its former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi.
Professor Maikudi’s removal was part of a broader succession crisis that led to government intervention.
However, in her first address to the University Senate as published on the University’s official Facebook page, Lar outlined her vision to restore the university’s academic excellence.
She emphasised unity and transparency as critical components in moving the institution forward, stressing that the university must acknowledge its shortcomings.
“We have not exhibited the highest or loftiest sense of decorum, tolerance, respect for each other, and self-restraint in the face of provocation. These are characteristics of a community of noble scholars.
“We must all commit to working for the progress of academic excellence in this university. With the great potential and scholars of international repute in this institution, and our strategic location in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, we must work together to build a great citadel of knowledge,” she stated.
Recalling her arrival on campus on February 11, 2025, Lar expressed gratitude for the warm reception from both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as key university officials and stakeholders.
She acknowledged the university’s turbulent leadership crisis, which affected its ranking among reputable institutions, but noted that the university was recovering quickly.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor reiterated her mandate to oversee a transparent selection process for the university’s eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor within her six-month tenure.
She called on all stakeholders to foster an atmosphere of peace and inclusivity to ensure a smooth transition. “The process of appointing a new vice-chancellor will commence soon, once a full council is constituted, and representatives from the Senate and Congregation will be elected accordingly.
“This task cannot be accomplished in an atmosphere of mistrust, chaos, or division.”
Prof. Lar further emphasised the need for the election of strong, selfless, and capable representatives who uphold the values of fairness and accountability.
