Over 16 students of the University of Calabar have been taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital following a stampede which occurred when they were struggling to find seats to take an examination at the institution’s examination hall.
An eyewitness, Mrs. Ruth Bisong, said the the students were billed to write the General Studies and Communication Skills (GSS) examinations which were postponed to Saturday from Friday.
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that the GSS examination was supposed to be written by 100 level students drawn from faculties in the institution.
The source stated that the examination was originally meant to be taken in batches but that the students did not move in an orderly manner into the examination hall, rather, they rushed in to secure the few spaces available one.
The GSS examination was meant to be the climax of the institution’s second semester examinations which began on October 16, 2023.
Efforts to get the management’s comment on the issue failed at the time of filing in this report, just as no official statement on the stampede had been issued by the university management.
