The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Sokoto State Government for its swift response to the recent cholera outbreak in some hard-to-reach communities across the state.

The outbreak, which occurred in remote areas with limited access to basic services, prompted an emergency intervention by the State government after cases were first reported by local health volunteers.

According to a statement released by the UNICEF Field Office in Sokoto, the government’s immediate action was crucial in stabilising affected persons and preventing wider spread.

Efforts included mass sensitisation campaigns on cholera prevention, emphasising improved hygiene practices and the elimination of open defecation.

Drugs and other essential supplies were rapidly dispatched to Primary Health Care Centres in the affected areas, with response times recorded within 24 hours despite the difficult terrains.

UNICEF provided critical support covering 12 local government areas — Binji, Dange Shuni, Gada, Goronyo, Gwadabawa, Kebbe, Kware, Silame, Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Tureta, and Wamakko.

The support included 20 cartons of Aqua Tabs, 577 cholera kits, 289 WASH dignity kits, and six drums of chlorine.

The intervention was funded through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the US Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance.

The collaboration between the Sokoto State Government and UNICEF has been vital in addressing the outbreak, containing the disease, and promoting public health in vulnerable communities.
