The United Nations Children’s Fund has launched a leadership, management and governance capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening primary healthcare systems in Nigeria.
The initiative, being implemented in partnership with Development Governance International Consult, will focus on assessing primary healthcare governance and management, while driving measurable and incremental improvements to enhance service delivery.
The programme is currently being piloted in Adamawa State, Kwara State and Sokoto State.
Activities marking the commencement of the project began in Abuja with a high-level stakeholders’ engagement workshop designed to kick-start implementation.
The workshop brought together leadership from state ministries of health and relevant agencies across the three states, alongside representatives of UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund and DGI Consult.
Participants at the meeting collaboratively developed the project’s methodology, processes and tools, with a focus on ensuring local ownership and long-term sustainability of the programme.
The initiative is expected to strengthen governance structures at the primary healthcare level and improve overall health outcomes in the participating states.
