The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Kebbi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KBPHCDA) and other implementing partners, has organised a quiz competition among primary and secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi to commemorate World Polio Day.
The competition, held at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) within the KBPHCDA office complex, aimed to equip students with basic knowledge on the effects of polio virus and prevention measures.
The participating schools included Malala Quarters Primary School, Eramus Academy, Genius Learning Trees Academy, NYSC Primary School, and GGDSS Tudunwada Secondary School. The quiz questions centered on poliovirus, and the competition was moderated by Salihu Sani from Nigeria Health Watch, with Dr. Mubarak Sale leading the panel of judges.
Alhaji Yusuf Umar Sauwa, Health Educator at KBPHCDA, expressed gratitude to the schools, students, parents, and implementing partners, including UNICEF, Nigeria Health Watch, WHO, ACE Groups, and CRS, for their support.
“The today’s activity is part of the World Polio Day Celebration, aimed at equipping children with basic knowledge on the effects of polio virus and encouraging them to become advocates for polio virus campaign in their respective schools,” he stated.
The quiz competition results were as follows: Genius Learning Trees Academy scored 18 marks, GGDSS Tudunwada Secondary School scored 17 marks, Malala Quarters Primary School and NYSC Primary School both scored 14 marks, and Eramus Academy scored 13 marks. All participating schools were presented with certificates of participation and transport fees.
In his appreciation, Alhaji Sauwa thanked the media for their vital role and support, saying, “On behalf of the agency, we thanked everyone for participation, support, and cooperation. We prayed to Almighty God for a safe journey back to your various destinations.”
