The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) has reiterated its commitment to creating children-friendly learning atmosphere for improved basic skills and learning outcomes in Jigawa State.
UNICEF announced this during the celebration of the International Day of Children Play it organised, with support from the European Union (EU), in collaboration with the State Ministry for Basic Education.
The event themed, “Strengthening Learning, Bonding, and Development Through Play,” was held at Kiyawa Special Primary School in Kiyawa local vovernment area of Jigawa State.
Parents, teachers and hundreds of pupils joined millions of children worldwide to celebrate the day marked with different traditional and modern play games.
At the occasion, UNICEF official, Mr Muttaka Muhammad Mukhtar said, the occasion was organised to encourage parents and teachers to support children by providing an enabling environment to play for their education and physical development.
“Research has shown that play and entertainment help children to grow well, with good mental and physical development. Therefore, parents, teachers, government and the general public need to support them in this aspect,” Muttaka stated.
The children who participated in various play games were visibly happy and encouraged by the participation of their parents and teachers in the celebration.
The celebration, which bridged the gap between parents and pupils, also demonstrated how parents can assist their children’s learning and growth through playing and entertainment.
In his remarks, an official from the donor partners, Mr Sunday, advised parents to provide time for their children to play, as playing is part of the recommended process for children’s growth and development.
The chairman of the State Universal Basic Education, Prof Haruna Musa, who was represented by Muhammad Ibrahim Fannami, thanked UNICEF and other donor partners for their various interventions in promoting teaching and learning in Jigawa State.
He reiterated the commitment of the state government to join hands with partners, parents, and the general public in promoting all activities that will enhance teaching and learning in the state for sustainable development.
