After a tough and exciting semi-final match between the two hosts, LASU and UNILAG, of the ongoing 11th All Africa University (FASU) Games, the Akoka boys got the better of the Ojo lads via a dramatic penalty shootout, 4-1 to qualify for the final.

The explosive 90 minutes of soccer artistry by both sides in the “Lagos derby” failed to produce any goal and the two sides had to be separated by penalties to decide who picked the final ticket.

With few chances and some saves by both goalkeepers, no goal was recorded in the open play. Just before going into the shoot-out, the two sides changed their safe hands and brought in their reserved  goalkeepers for the penalty shoot-out.

UNILAG scored 4 out of the 5 kicks, while LASU scored one, a shot hit the crossbar and the other was kicked above the bar to give the visitors the victory.

About 5,000 vociferous fans watched the match at the Sports and Recreation Centre, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.

They left the pitch disappointed and dejected. The LASU lads were unconsolable,  knowing fully well they would not play the final.

Meanwhile, the Blazers will return to the same spot to face FUOYE in the Third place final on Saturday, 28th September, 2024. The match has been dubbed the “South West derby”.

In the first semi-final, FUOYE, also lost to finalist, University of Development Studies (UDS), Ghana by 2-4 penalties at the same venue.

LASU beat FUOYE 2-1 in the group stage and the Oye-Ekiti based team will be ready to avenge the defeat.
