A group of concerned members of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has issued a formal petition calling for increased transparency, inclusivity, and structured engagement within the association as it prepares for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) scheduled for May 3rd,2025.

In a statement released to journalists in Abuja yesterday, the group, identifying as Concerned Members of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association, addressed the petition to the National Caretaker Committee, with copies sent to the Board of Trustees (BOT) and the vice-chancellor of the University of Maiduguri.

The petition acknowledges the committee’s efforts in organising the upcoming EGM but raises critical concerns about the process, particularly the lack of access to the draft constitution, which is a central agenda item for the meeting.

The group argues that the failure to circulate the draft prevents members from providing meaningful input on a document pivotal to the association’s future.

“We strongly urge the National Caretaker Committee to circulate the draft constitution alongside the existing one without delay,” the petition read.

It called for the use of multiple channels, including emails, alumni platforms, and state chapter representatives, to ensure wide dissemination.

The group also proposes a defined period for members to submit feedback.

Additionally, the petitioners expressed concerns over the planned virtual format of the EGM, warning that it could limit robust engagement and equitable participation.

“To address this, we advocate for a hybrid meeting model, which would include a central physical venue in either Maiduguri or Abuja, simultaneous physical meetings in active state chapters, and virtual linkages to enable synchronised participation.

“This model will foster meaningful engagement, allow real-time contributions from diverse locations, and uphold the democratic values the association stands for,” the petition stated.

Reaffirming their commitment to the association’s unity and sustainability, the concerned members urged the committee to act swiftly on their recommendations to enhance confidence in the process and ensure inclusive decision-making.
