The University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has announced plans to launch a N1bn endowment fund in 2027 to provide scholarships and other forms of support to students of the institution.
The Global President of the association, Baba Shettima Kukawa, disclosed this on Saturday while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of its maiden Annual General Meeting in Abuja.
Kukawa said the proposed fund would support students with tuition fees, living expenses and other educational needs, while explaining that the implementation and scope of the initiative would depend on the financial realities at the time of its launch.
He said, “We are trying to launch a N1bn endowment fund next year. Once we have the benefits, then we can now look at it, because it is going to be based on what the realities of that time will be. So, in terms of how we support them with tuition, how we support them with living expenses, and all those things.”
Speaking on the association’s vision, Kukawa said its leadership was working towards building a sustainable organisation anchored on unity, structure and impact.
He explained that the three-point agenda was designed to bring former students together, establish an effective administrative framework and deliver meaningful interventions.
“We came in last year and said we had a three-point agenda. One is unity. Two is structure. Three is impact. Because if you do not mobilise all the members that have graduated from school and put them under one umbrella, then whatever you do is a failure.
“You also need to provide a structure. So, how does the organisation work? What are the tiers of the organisation? What are the processes?” he said.
The alumni president said the association had registered nearly 10,000 members through its online portal within four months, adding that policies, procedures and administrative frameworks were being developed to ensure the association remained effective beyond the tenure of its current leadership.
Kukawa said the association’s planned interventions would cover its members, students, the university and its host community, listing scholarships, mentorship programmes, professional development initiatives and infrastructure projects among its priorities.
“What we are doing today, what we have been doing for the past month, is to build an association that will outlive us.
“We have created a portal where we have registered almost 10,000 members so far within the past four months. We are putting in processes and procedures, policies and frameworks that will also allow us to govern and provide the right impact,” he said.
