Members of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), have protested what they called, “illegal disengagement of over 400 casual workers and 391 permanent staff of the Lagos State Water Corporation.”
The general secretary, AUPCTRE, Comrade Sikiru Waheed, who led the protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly urged the lawmakers to intervene.
While lamenting that the process of disengaging workers from the service as stated in the Labour Act (Section 20) was flouted, Waheed alleged that the management of the corporation had not been judicious with funds meant for projects and other expenditures.
According to a petition submitted to the House, the association further stated that “the decline in water services in Lagos State was not caused by the staff, but that it is rooted in the corporation’s poor decision-making process.
The association appealed to the Head of Service to redeploy the disengaged workers to other ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) where their services would be required.
Responding on behalf of the speaker of the House, Rt Hon (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, a lawmaker, Hon Adebola Shabi, commended the association for its peaceful gathering and assured them that their petition would be addressed by the leadership of the House.
