Six days after an assassination attempt on him, former Governor of Imo State Chief Ikedi Ohakim has tasked security agencies to identify the fleeing gunmen and other security breaches.

Ohakim made the disclosure in a statement he signed personally titled “thank you, fellow compatriots” and made available via his social media handles.

The former governor’s convoy was on January 2nd 2023 ambushed by suspected assassins at Oriagu, in the Ehime Mbano local government area of the State. While he and two of his children escaped the shooting because of his bullet-proof vehicle, four policemen and a driver were gunned down by the gunmen.

Ohakim called for a lasting solution to insecurity saying “I lend my voice in calling on the security agencies to leave no stone unturned not only in unraveling the mystery behind this particular incident, but to ultimately find a lasting solution to what now seems like an intractable national problem.”

While the statement condemned the attack, he lamented the gruesome killing of the security operatives and the driver.

“These were young men at the prime of their youth and career and for whom the future held quite a lot. The circumstances of death is yet another very sad commentary on our collective existence as a people but as a person and as a family, it is a personal loss,” the statement read.

He commended the breakthroughs recorded by the Imo State Police command and Governor Hope Uzodimma in combating insecurity, even as he expressed hopes that soon those behind the attacks will be flushed out.

Meanwhile, the former governor has promised to assuage the family of the slain security operatives and expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their collective concerns for his safety.
