The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has voiced its support for the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani-Maikudi as the acting vice-chancellor of the University of Abuja, addressing concerns raised in a petition submitted to the Minister of Education, Dr Morufu Alausa.
The petition questions the legality of Professor Sani-Maikudi’s appointment, citing alleged non-compliance with federal guidelines regarding the number of years she has served as a professor.
However, UNYF has clarified that there is no statutory requirement for a specific length of professorship to qualify for the vice-chancellor position in Nigerian universities.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, UNYF’s national deputy president, Comrade Oluwafemi Idowu Shoroye, emphasized that the selection of a vice-chancellor should be based on academic credentials and leadership abilities rather than tenure requirements.
UNYF highlighted several instances where universities have appointed vice-chancellors without imposing strict tenure conditions.
These include past appointments at the University of Abuja, Bayero University Kano, and the University of Maiduguri, among others. The group also noted that many institutions only require candidates to hold the title of professor, regardless of years of experience.
Reaffirming its support, UNYF described Professor Sani-Maikudi as a visionary leader capable of driving progress and fostering academic excellence at the University of Abuja.
“As young Nigerians committed to the development of our education system, we firmly believe in Professor Sani-Maikudi’s qualifications and readiness to lead. Her leadership promises a brighter future for the university and its students,” said Comrade Shoroye.
The group urged stakeholders to focus on fostering growth and innovation at the institution while dismissing any distractions posed by the petition.
UNYF concluded by expressing confidence in the Minister of Education and the University of Abuja Governing Council to ensure a fair and transparent selection process, paving the way for the university’s continued success under Professor Sani-Maikudi’s leadership.
