Kano State Government has redeemed its earlier pledge to victims of the 2025 Uromi attack in Edo State with the disbursement of cash and food items to affected families.
The intervention was carried out on Friday at the palace of the district head of Bunkure in Bunkure Local Government Area of the state.
Representing Governor Abba Yusuf, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the gesture was aimed at alleviating the suffering of families of the deceased as well as survivors of the tragic incident.
He disclosed that 16 families of those killed received N300,000 each, while 13 survivors were given N200,000 each, in addition to food items, including two bags of rice per beneficiary.
Waiya said the disbursement was in fulfilment of a commitment made by the governor during a condolence visit to the community shortly after the incident.
According to him, the governor had initially believed the pledge had been executed but, upon discovering the delay, directed immediate action to ensure the support reached the beneficiaries.
“We are here to redeem the pledge made by His Excellency when he visited and sympathised with the families of the victims of the Uromi killings,” he said.
He described the incident, which claimed 16 lives and left 13 others injured, as a national tragedy, noting that the victims were attacked by a mob while returning to the North.
The commissioner further disclosed that efforts were ongoing to facilitate the payment of compensation promised by the Edo State Government, adding that a dedicated bank account had been opened for the victims.
He expressed optimism that the compensation would be released soon and urged the affected families to remain patient.
In his remarks, the Hakimin Bunkure, Alhaji Aminu Isah Umar, commended the state government for fulfilling its promise and prayed for continued peace, unity and prosperity in the state.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the incident.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the victims, mostly hunters from Kano State, were attacked in Uromi, Edo State, by a vigilante group after being mistaken for kidnappers while travelling home for Sallah celebrations in 2025.
