Italy’s military said on Sunday that a drone attack targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, a facility hosting Italian and United States forces, but confirmed that all personnel were safe.
“This morning, Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait, which hosts American and Italian personnel and capabilities, was the target of a drone attack,” Chief of the Defence General Staff, General Luciano Portolano, said in a statement posted by the military on X.
According to him, the drone struck a shelter housing a remotely piloted aircraft belonging to the Italian Task Force Air (TFA), destroying the aircraft.
“At the time of the attack, all personnel were safe and uninjured,” the statement added.
The Armed Forces General Staff noted that the number of personnel at the base had been reduced in recent days due to the evolving security situation in the region.
“The personnel remaining at the base are being deployed to carry out essential mission activities,” the statement said.
It added that the destroyed aircraft had been a key operational asset and had remained stationed at the base to support ongoing operations.
The development comes days after an Italian military base in Iraqi Kurdistan was also targeted in a drone attack, though no injuries were recorded.
Following that incident, Rome announced it would temporarily withdraw its personnel—fewer than 300 troops—from Erbil, where they had been training local security forces as part of an international mission.
