The Nigerian banking industry is in mourning following the devastating news that Access Bank CEO Herbert Wigwe, his wife, son and former Nigerian Stock Exchange chairman. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, were killed in a tragic helicopter crash in the United States.
In a statement yesterday, the chairman/CEO of UTM FLNG Ltd, Julius Rone expressed grief over the tragic passing of his close friend and brother, Herbert Wigwe.
Rone lamented the enormous losses not just for Access Bank but for Nigeria’s corporate world and the global financial sector.
Herbert Wigwe was hailed by Rone as a quintessential banker, wealth creator, education promoter and remarkable philanthropist who made immeasurable contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth.
He said, “The news of the tragic death of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Group Managing Director of Access Bank plc, my beloved brother and friend, Herbert Wigwe, in helicopter crash in the United State has left me heartbroken, shattered and inconsolable.
“It is even more heart-wrenching that the tragic event also claimed the lives of his exceptionally graceful wife, Chizoba, his son, and the former group chairman of Nigeria Stock Exchange, Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
“Indeed, our nation, humanity, the corporate world and particularly the global financial sector have lost a leading light, a rare brand who with extraordinary genius, industry and diligence bestrode his chosen path as a Colossus and made immemorable contributions towards national and global economic growth and stability.”
Rone said Wigwe’s pioneering initiatives, such as The Access Conference’s ‘Thought-Leadership Series,’ showcased his commitment to fostering global cooperation and addressing critical issues facing humanity.
According to him, despite his towering achievements, Wigwe maintained a humble demeanor and dedicated himself to uplifting others through philanthropy.
“His philanthropist roles in supporting the less privileged, vulnerable children, orphans and internally displaced persons through his numerous charity platforms speak volumes of the heart he and his wife had for humanity.”
