The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, calling for restraint, respect for international laws and an inclusive political process to resolve the crisis.
In a statement issued yesterday, ECOWAS acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking but cautioned that such actions must not violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations.
It reminded the international community of its obligations under international law, particularly Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
ECOWAS also stated that it fully aligns with the African Union’s statement of January 3, 2026, which urged restraint and called for inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela.
“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has followed with concern recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
“While it recognises the right of states to fight international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS wishes to remind the global community about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter.
“ECOWAS fully aligns itself with the statement the African Union issued on 3 January 2026, which calls for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, it appealed to all states to respect the country’s independence and territorial integrity, while supporting the Venezuelan people as they work towards shaping their country’s future through an inclusive and peaceful process.
“ECOWAS reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all states to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Venezuela.”
