The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed optimism that the judgements delivered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria regarding the governorship election disputes in various states across the country will pave the way for improved public faith in the nation’s justice system.

CNG said the decisions have not only potentially reinstated the confidence and faith of Nigerians in the nation’s justice system but have also demonstrated the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the principles of justice and fairness.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanci, CNG called on state governors to allow the conduct of free and fair elections into local government councils in accordance with democratic standards.

Charanci said, “The Supreme Court Justices, through their considered decisions, have proven their dedication to the sustainment of justice and fairness. By upholding the popular will of the people, they have reasserted the judiciary’s position as the temple of justice.

“This is a significant achievement, as it ensures that the voice of the people is heard and respected, and that the democratic process is upheld.”

The CNG also acknowledged the neutrality of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in these matters, saying his commendable refusal to interfere with the course of justice has paved the way for justice to be served. It said this demonstrates a commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, which are essential for a functioning democracy.

“Tinubu’s neutrality throughout the Supreme Court process indicates his commitment to leaving a legacy of entrenched judicial independence for coming administrations to build upon.

It is important for the President to take measures to further strengthen the nation’s institutions to ensure a stable nation that the future can be proud of,” the statement said.

The CNG called upon the successful governors to keep in mind the unwavering public support they have received throughout the litigation process.

The group issued a warning to all 36 state governors, urging them not to betray the trust given to them by the public and urged them to discard the disdainful practice by previous administrations of imposing local government executives outside of democratic processes, which resulted in the weakening of the local government system and subversion of the people’s will.
