A local vigilante officer, Comrade Godstime Ihunwo and a human rights activist, Prince Wiro, in the early hours of yesterday, rescued a new born baby that was dumped to die at a waste receptacle at the Mile Three Park in Port Harcourt.
LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that Ihunwo, who is the chief security officer of Nkpolu-Oroworukwo community in Port Harcourt City local government area, had alerted Wiro at about 3:00am and both of them went to the waste dump to rescue the baby.
Speaking with newsmen, the vigilante officer said: “I discovered a new born baby who was less than six hours old. At the point of discovery, the baby was still wrapped with clothes and placenta.
“I rescued the child and immediately called a female nurse for urgent medical attention to be given to the baby. Upon inspection by the nurse, the baby was discovered to be a female.
“I called Prince Wiro, a human rights activist who immediately came to my office and accompanied me to Nkpolu Police Station to make a formal compliant.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to the Rivers State government to prevail on the contractors in charge of Ikwerre road street lights to ensure the lights are always on at night as we have discovered that the street light are switched off some night”.
Also speaking, Prince Wiro condemned the action of the unknown mother who left the baby at the mercy of death, describing the action as inhumane, callous and barbaric.
He advised young females who think they cannot take care of a child after giving birth to seek help by approaching the relevant government ministry in charge of children welfare rather than throwing away the baby.
Police spokesman in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the rescued child had been transferred to the Motherless Babies’ Home.
