Virgin Music Group, a leading independent artist and label services company, has extended its operations with a new office in Lagos, Nigeria. Notably, Olukorede “Kay” Ikazoboh, a highly respected music executive, has been named as the Head of Virgin Music Nigeria, taking charge of the company’s activities in the region.
Virgin’s initial ventures in Nigeria encompass collaborations with Dvpper, a prominent Afrobeats label in Nigeria, the solo artist Reekado Banks, and a track featuring Darkoo and Ayra Starr.
Nat Pastor, co-CEO of Virgin Music, expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “The global demand for the incredible musical talents emerging from Africa has never been stronger. Our presence in Nigeria underscores our commitment to support independent African artists and entrepreneurs across the region.”
Michael Roe, Managing Director of Virgin Music International, commended Kay’s reputation, noting, “Kay is renowned in Nigeria as a champion of independent labels and artist development. Her local market expertise and industry relationships make her the ideal leader for our operations in this pivotal music market.”
Kay, who operates her own Kimani Moore Entertainment, is a respected music manager known for guiding the careers of artists such as Odunsi the Engine, Mowalola, and Taylwar. She has also held various roles in Emerging Markets at Warner Music Group.
Speaking about her role, Kay said, “Nigeria has evolved into a significant creative hub, producing some of the most exciting music globally. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with independent labels and artists to help expand their fan bases, both locally and internationally. Leading this mission with my team is a true honor, and I look forward to the remarkable journey ahead.”
Virgin Music Group established its presence in Africa in 2021 when it acquired South Africa’s Electromode, a leading independent music distributor. Last year, the company inaugurated a dedicated label services division in Côte d’Ivoire, boasting over 15,000 titles, 50 label partners, and more than 100 artists from across 25 African countries.
Virgin Music Group has played a pivotal role in nurturing various emerging global music genres, including Afrobeats, música Mexicana, K-pop, and more.
