The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) has strongly condemned the recent visa denial by the Canadian Embassy in Nigeria to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and his delegation.

In a press conference on Monday, the group described the decision as an “affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty” and urged the federal government to take decisive action.

Addressing journalists, CONYL president general Comrade Goodluck Ibem expressed deep dismay over what he termed an “insult” to Nigeria’s highest-ranking military official.

“This decision is not only an insult to the individual concerned but, more importantly, a direct affront to the sovereignty of our country,” Ibem stated.

According to the coalition, the denial of a visa to the CDS undermines diplomatic relations and disrespects Nigeria’s military leadership.

“The head of our armed forces plays a crucial role in maintaining the security and stability of our nation, and such an arbitrary decision challenges our right to engage with the global community on our terms,” the statement read.

The youth leaders argued that restricting the CDS from international engagements sends a negative message and could impact Nigeria’s ability to collaborate on global security matters.

“This act challenges our right to engage in international affairs and sends a dangerous signal about the disrespect of our sovereignty,” CONYL’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Omolaja Kolawole, added.

In their statement, the coalition urged the federal government to take a firm stand and ensure that such “disrespect” is addressed to safeguard Nigeria’s dignity and diplomatic standing. “We trust that the federal government will consider this issue seriously and take the appropriate steps to protect our nation’s dignity and sovereignty,” the group stated.
