The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has announced the cancellation of classification matches for teams placed between 17th and 32nd at the forthcoming 47th Men’s African Club Championship in Kigali.
The tournament, scheduled to run from 22 April to 3 May, has been expanded to accommodate a record number of participating teams. A total of 37 clubs have registered for the competition, significantly exceeding the traditional format, which typically features fewer than 25 teams.
In response to the increased participation, CAVB confirmed via an official statement that matches used to determine final rankings among lower-placed teams will no longer be played. The decision is aimed at streamlining the competition schedule and addressing logistical challenges posed by the expanded format.
Organisers believe the adjustment will enable more efficient tournament management while ensuring the core competitive structure remains intact. The focus will now be on matches that directly influence progression to the knockout stages and the eventual title race.
Despite the changes, the championship is expected to maintain a high level of competition, with clubs from across the continent vying for supremacy. The tournament continues to serve as a key platform for showcasing African volleyball talent and fostering greater development within the sport.
Nigeria will be represented by the Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club, which enters the competition as the country’s sole participant. The team will aim to make a strong impression despite the intensified competition brought about by the expanded field.
