In an exhilarating display of resilience and tenacity, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have emerged victorious in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), claiming their record-extending tenth title. Key players Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie shared their heartfelt reflections and the significance of this victory during a breakfast session hosted by MTN Nigeria in Lagos.
The triumph was particularly remarkable given the odds stacked against the Falcons. After a challenging first half in the final against Morocco, where they found themselves trailing 2-0, the team rallied spectacularly to secure a stunning 3-2 victory at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on 26th July. Their comeback silenced the home crowd and highlighted their unity and determination.
Asisat Oshoala:
Oshoala, a six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, expressed the deep personal significance of this latest title. “Every trophy is important and special,” she stated. “But what’s vital is the journey, not just the trophy itself. Years down the line, it’s the experiences we share that we’ll cherish.” Oshoala, having previously won WAFCON titles in 2014, 2016, 2018, and now 2024, credited the supportive environment fostered by her teammates and staff. “When you enjoy the journey with your teammates, it makes everything easier,” she added.
Reflecting on the pressure leading up to the tournament, Oshoala acknowledged the team’s mental fortitude. “We didn’t let external distractions affect us. We stayed focused and united,” she remarked, also mentioning advice from Nigerian football officials about maintaining seriousness without losing the joy of the game. “This win is special because we have a talented group that knows what they want, and we’ve received tremendous support from the federation,” she concluded, thanking fans across Nigeria for their encouragement.
Ashleigh Plumptre:
For defender Ashleigh Plumptre, the camaraderie within the Super Falcons has been a source of inspiration. “They inspire me every time I’m with them,” she said, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome she received upon joining the squad. Plumptre, who plays for Saudi Premier League club Al-Ittihad, noted the electrifying atmosphere created by Nigerian supporters, both at home and in the stadium. “It’s surreal to hear everyone chanting. I feel overwhelmed and incredibly grateful for their support,” she shared, adding that the team’s unity has made winning the trophy even more meaningful.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka:
Nnadozie, hailed as the tournament’s best goalkeeper, reflected on her readiness to face a penalty that was controversially overturned during the final. “When the referee called the penalty, I was confident I could save it,” she revealed. Nnadozie’s commanding presence in goal was crucial in the tournament, as she made significant saves and led her teammates with motivation. “I was waiting to shine, and even though the penalty was disallowed, it gave us hope,” she said, recalling her determination to inspire her teammates during the match.
As the Super Falcons celebrate their victory, they also look forward to sharing more memorable moments, embodying the spirit of unity and determination that characterised their journey to success in WAFCON 2024.
