The Oyo State government has threatened to sanction about 20 waste management consultants who have failed to honour the agreement with the government to dispose of refuse in the state.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Arc. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola stated this on Sunday after a meeting with the consultants in Ibadan, adding that the government’s aim in contracting waste collection in the state was to ensure a clean environment for the residents.

However, he expressed disappointment that, for months, some of the waste management consultants had not followed the terms of the agreement, as dirt littered major streets of Ibadan.

The Commissioner, therefore, said the Oyo state government has initiated a comprehensive review and renewal of the waste management consultant’s contract to ensure improved service delivery and compliance with environmental regulations.

According to him, the review process, held on Thursday and Friday at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan, aims to assess the consultant’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and enhance the efficiency of waste management services across the state.

Mogbonjubola emphasised that the evaluation focuses on key performance indicators, including operational efficiency, financial compliance, regulatory adherence, innovation, sustainability, and transparency.

He clarified that the review is not a witch hunt but a necessary step to ensure that public concerns are addressed and service delivery is optimised.

He said that to oversee the process, a mini-committee was set up to conduct a thorough assessment.

“Upon completion, the Ministry will decide whether to extend the contract under revised terms or renegotiate it to improve performance”, he said.

The commissioner also reiterated the Oyo State Government’s commitment to modernising waste management through innovative solutions such as smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling initiatives to complement the consultant’s efforts.

“But I must say that I am disappointed with the low performance of the waste contractors because, for the last two months, waste continued to pile on the roads with nobody coming to evacuate them.”
