Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged opposition parties in Nigeria to remain united, warning that a weakened opposition could pose serious risks to the country’s democratic stability.

Makinde made the call on Saturday while speaking at the opposition leaders’ summit held in Ibadan, the state capital.

The meeting, which took place at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, brought together key figures from a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and other political groups. Organisers said the summit was convened to strengthen coordination among opposition parties.

Addressing participants, the host governor emphasised that the gathering was not intended to foster division or confrontation, but to encourage responsible political engagement.

“If we allow opposition to weaken, whether by design or neglect, then we all bear the consequences. This is not a movement for fragmentation or violence, nor is it a call for political disengagement,” he said.

Makinde noted that the initiative was aimed at promoting honest dialogue and collective responsibility across party lines in the interest of national stability.

“It is about thinking clearly, speaking honestly, and acting with a sense of responsibility that goes beyond party affiliations,” he added.

He further stressed that Nigeria’s current socio-economic and security challenges demanded collaboration among political actors, warning that the country could not afford to ignore the implications of a fractured opposition.

The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” was described by organisers as a response to growing concerns over governance, security, and economic pressures in the country.
