The minister of state for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Esq., has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing Nigerians with the best road maintenance and safety across the Federal roads network.
He stated this during a familiarisation visit to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Headquarters on Wednesday.
In a statement by the Director of Information, FERMA, Mrs Maryam M. Sanusi, Goronyo said Nigerians deserve the best experience in pleasurable ride and security from all forms of danger when using the road.
However, he bemoaned the country’s poor budgetary allocation for road maintenance as a factor militating against the realisation of this dream.
The Minister said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritised infrastructure, especially roads. Still, poor budgetary provision occasioned by competing needs from all sectors and the state of the economy has made things difficult.
He said he is comfortable with the agency’s performance and is ready to provide all necessary support to ensure the presidential mandate is achieved in the road sector.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso said it was because funds were inadequate and releases were not timely “that we are witnessing some setbacks in the road sector.”
He pointed out that the FERMA staff is highly committed to their duties and that the agency possesses some of the best staff in the Civil Service.
In his response, the Managing Director/CEO, Engr Emeka Agbasi, thanked the Minister for his support and commitment to making the Federal road network motorable all year round.
