The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it will commence the process of rebuilding and recalibrating its structures after the recent defections that hit the party.

The national publicity secretary of PDP, Hon Debo Ologunagba, said this against the backdrop of the holding of the party’s 101 National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday.

He disclosed that the NEC will deliberate and ratify the zoning committees and congresses before the national convention.

At a press conference, the spokesman noted that all the constitutional issues surrounding this NEC meeting, including the invitation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had been addressed.

He said, “ One other thing I would like you to consider in the NEC meeting is that it will be the ratification of completed congresses across the country, some states, some local governments, and some boards. Of course, the NWC has considered that in line with the normal procedures after the processes, it will be presented to the NEC for rectification,” he said.

On the state of the party, Ologunagba said PDP is very strong.

“We have started the process of recalibrating and coming together in unity because the strength of this party is in the people across the country, in the local areas.

“So we are focused, we’re recalibrating, we’re united, and we’re working together and working towards having a very successful national convention.

“In the euphoria of the last couple of days, we have been recording some defections. Our party is organic and very formidable.

“It is important to make it clear that it is the people who truly make a party.

“Yes, leaders are important. Individuals are very critical because there can’t be leaders without followers. So those followers are there. What is good for the party is the fact that the people are not defecting.”

He said the people are not defecting from hunger and insecurity.

“Only two days ago, our Anambra State Candidate was attacked here in Abuja. It goes to underscore the level of insecurity in this country under this rudderless and irresponsible APC government that is completely insensitive.

“It’s a government that tells people to fast when they are feasting.  So, the people that make up the bulk of the membership of our party, and indeed Nigerians who are even apolitical, look up to the PDP.

“So, we’re strong, irrespective of what we hear and what people want to hear about people defecting,” he said.
