Sokoto State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Engr Mustapha Muhammad, has assured the state government support to revatilising the game of Polo in the state.

Engineer Mustapha Muhammad dropped this cheering news when he visited the new Polo ground, alongside top echelon of the ministry staffs on one hand and the leadership of the Sokoto Polo Club, at the back of late Hassan Magaji Garin Housing Estate, Kwanawa.

The Commissioner boasted of massive and appreciable improvement on the 10-hectares Polo ground, in the next two years.

“Sokoto state is known for Polo and the government is interested in reviving the game, starting from the play ground.

“Sokoto has a proud history in Polo, famously championed by late Governor Shehu Kangiwa, one of Nigeria’s most iconic Polo players. We are committed to honouring that legacy and reviving Polo as a key part of our sporting identity

“With shall involve companies with Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, to undertake certain aspects of constructions and before you know it, we shall take our rightful place,” Engineer Mustapha stated.

The visit provided an opportunity for the Commissioner and his team to assess the condition of the club and engage stakeholders on strategies for revatilization.

The trio of Professor Ahmed Sabir Mohammad, Professor Almustapha Aliyu and Farouk Mohammad Koko, President, Vice President and Secretary of Sokoto Polo Club respectively, could not hide their joy, on the state government involvement in revatilising the game in the state.

Traditional leader, Marafa Mai Gwandu Lugga and other prominent stakeholders exhoed similar sentiments, thanking the state government for recognizing the cultural and social value of Polo in Sokoto.

Professor Ahmed Sabir Mohammad, the President and his Vice, Professor Almustapha Aliyu, lamented the dormant of the game in the last twenty years and promised resuscitation of the game.

This was corroborated by the Secretary, Farouk Koko, who stated that, “we will open our portal for registration of interested new members.”
