We’re Running Out Of Excuses, Owen Warns Liverpool’s £125m Isak

Liverpool legend Michael Owen has warned Alexander Isak that he must begin delivering consistently for the Reds, insisting that the forward is “running out of excuses” after a difficult debut season.

Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for a club-record £125 million last summer, but his first campaign at Anfield was severely disrupted by injuries.

The Sweden international managed only four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 season after suffering a fractured leg in December and a groin problem in May.

Although Owen acknowledged the difficulties Isak faced, he believes the 26-year-old must now demonstrate the form that persuaded Liverpool to make such a significant investment in him.

Speaking to talkSPORT after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle, Owen said his own experience with injuries had given him an understanding of the difficulties involved in returning to full fitness.

“I experienced numerous injuries throughout my career, so I understand how challenging it is to return, and it does require some time,” Owen said.

However, he added: “We’ve given him time; everyone has given him time and understood that. But he’s finished the season, then he’s gone to the World Cup, and now he’s had a pre-season, and you just think, OK, now we’re starting to run out of excuses.”

Isak featured in all four of Sweden’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before their elimination by France in the round of 32.

Owen believes Liverpool urgently need the striker to find his best form following Mohamed Salah’s departure and Hugo Ekitike’s injury.
