Lagos State commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule, has urged the over two million students in the state to be good ambassadors, as they are being trained to become the country’s future leaders.
The commissioner stated this at the Lagos Reads Inter Schools Quiz Competition held in Lagos by six selected public schools.
According to him, the Lagos Reads programme was borne out of a simple belief that every child in Lagos State, regardless of school or background, deserves access to stories, ideas and knowledge that expand their world.
He added that the state government is investing in education as the pillar upon which all other developments rest.
“I therefore charge our students to justify the government’s continued investment in education by regularly updating their knowledge through continuous reading and avoiding sensational social media use. Engage yourself in effective and meaningful readings by working harder and shun all negative activities that can undermine the growth of education in the state.”
The commissioner averred that students should cultivate a reading culture, which must be improved in consonance with Mr Governor’s Theme + Agenda, with education and technology as the third pillar.
The commissioner urged the students to be disciplined, saying that the quiz competition is like an investment in our youth.
“We are committed to encouraging our students to read as reading makes them versatile,” he said.
Sule thanked the teachers for nurturing the students and keeping the flame of learning alive in the state’s public schools, saying, “Your work often goes unseen, but it is the foundation of everything we celebrate.”
