Whaley Earns Walker Cup Call-Up 48 Hours After U.S. Amateur Triumph

Jack Whaley has been named in the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the Walker Cup just 48 hours after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The 22-year-old secured his place in the prestigious amateur team after defeating American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 in Sunday’s final at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

Whaley became only the third Englishman since 1911 to win the U.S. Amateur title, and his victory earned him a place among four first-time selections for the GB&I team.

He will be joined by Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook and Josh Hill, while Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup veteran Ian Poulter, has been selected for a second successive Walker Cup after an impressive season at the University of Florida.

Captain Dean Robertson, 56, will lead GB&I for the third time, having previously taken charge at Cypress Point in 2025. He also guided the side to victory over Europe in the St Andrews Trophy in Madrid last month.

“The blend of experienced players and new talent earned through strong performances gives us an exciting squad,” Robertson said.

The biennial Walker Cup has moved to an even-year cycle and will feature 18 singles and eight foursomes matches.

GB&I will face the United States at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland, on September 5 and 6, with the hosts seeking their first victory in the competition since 2015.

The United States won the previous edition 17-9 in 2025 and lead the overall series by 40 wins to nine, with one match halved.
