Who Do You Answer To?” — Singer Tems Says She Can Only Marry A God-Fearing Man

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared her views on marriage, stating that she cannot be with a partner who lacks a sense of higher accountability.

In a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the “Free Mind” star explained that marriage should be built on more than just temporary emotions. For her, a partner’s relationship with God is the ultimate guarantee of their commitment.

“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to?” Tems questioned during the sit-down.

She further argued that without accountability to a higher power, a person’s commitment remains fragile. “If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?”

Tems also noted that marriage should be a tool for personal growth rather than just a romantic fairy tale. She emphasised that compatibility and the ability to navigate “hard times” are more important than feelings alone. According to her, a good marriage is one that makes both individuals better human beings.
