Afrobeat musician and live performer, James John Bamidele popularly known as J. J Afroblackish has expressed his deep admiration for the Afrobeat legend, late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and his music as a powerful embodiment of Africa’s spirit which has shaped the music industry and history in Africa.
The Osogbo-based artiste added that Fela and the Afro Highlife legend, Orlando Julius Ekemode popularly known as O.J are his role model.
According to Afroblackish who learnt music practically from the much travelled and versatile Orlando Julius in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, said that Fela’s songs champion unity, justice, and freedom, resonating profoundly with society while O.J’s songs teach morals and tell the society about their roots.
The saxophonist emphasized the significance of Felabration in preserving Fela’s legacy for future generations. He further explained that the event has always brought together all musicians to promote African culture globally.
“This festival has always brought together all musicians to promote African culture globally and preserve Fela’s legacy for future generations,” he said.
He emphasised on how the issues Fela talked about in his songs in the 90’s are still affecting the country until now.
“Fela has impacted many lives; he talked about issues that still affect us till today in his songs in the 90’, making him a man worthy of celebration I was inspired by him but it really started from the late Orlando Julius O.J who I met physically and he told me to go learn music practically in the schools in order to be proficient and this impacted my life in no small way.
O.J died two years ago and I still honour him in death. Afrobeat music started from him and Pa Chris Ajilo (Afro Hi-life) before Fela now expanded it to what became global”.
Speaking on being among the list of artistes that performed at Felabration, Afroblackish who has released songs like Dide Sise Pawo (Stand Up, Work and Earn Money) expressed satisfaction in sharing his music with other Fela’s music lovers at the event.
“It is an honour to share my music with other fela’s enthusiasts and music buffs. Felabration is a testament to Fela’s enduring impact on African Music and culture”.
Afroblackish’s latest single ‘Shine’ pays homage to Fela’s iconic style, blending Afrobeat rhythms with contemporary production. “Fela’s spirit lives on through his music, and I’m humbled to be part of that continuation,” he added.
Felabration is Africa’s largest music festival celebrating Fela’s legacy. The 2024 edition started on October 14 and ended last Sunday, October 20. The event witnessed activities such as dancing competition, musical concerts, symposium and art exhibition.
