Baffled with inactivity of Labour Unions to tackle the federal government over hardship and hunger in the land, stakeholders have suggested that only selfless, disciplined and incorruptible leaders can wrestle and rescue the masses from this current state of economic despair.

Noting that though additional hardship, began over subsidy removal, the labour leaders could not resist it as they could not speak with one voice and with a united front.

Worried that shop and distributive union which ought to be at the centre of tackling food scarcity and the hike in price of food stuff, has been grounded by in-house conflicts, concerned members of National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees (NUSDE), known as Concerned Members in unanimous decision, noted that the time for one United house is now.

Lamenting that NUSDE has not been able to collectively tackle casualisation which has impoverished most members in NUSDE, the acting president of NUSDE, Comrade Aminu Megbontowon, lamented that members of the general public are suffering and languishing under the oppression of a handful of exploiters, as the umbrella body is engulfed in internal flames.

“We cannot continue to watch from afar while fellow Nigerians and our members, in particular are experiencing needless and untold hardship as a result of leadership ineptitude.”

According to Megbontowon, “The general masses and working class are really suffering in the midst of abundant natural resources. There is no other time than this, to resolve our age-long in-house crisis.”

Also, they noted that implementation of pension reform Act, Employees Compensation Act and other Labour laws should be strictly adhered to by employers of Labour.

Likewise, the chairman of Concerned Members NUSDE, Comrade Timothy Agbola, noted that the time for new era, to reshape and revive, especially NUSDE in order to rewake the glory of Organised Labour has come.

On his part, the National President of Precision Electrical and Related Equipment Senior Staff Association (PERESSA), Comrade Rufus Olusesan, reiterated the need for restoration of public confidence in Labour leaders.

According to Olusesan, it is only a united and formidable force that can tackle mass hardship, hunger, suffering and insecurity in the land.

“Labour Union leaders need to redirect themselves, and win war against hardship as we have lost our right and respect in the eyes of the general public and in the eyes of employers of Labour.”
