The committee led by a former deputy governor of Niger State and Ambassador to South Africa, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, made this known during a press briefing in Minna yesterday.

He said three emirates including Kontagora, Zuru and Borgu had agreed through a Memorandum of Understanding to locate the headquarters of the state in Kontagora.

He said the decision was informed by the availability of infrastructure and its central, economic activities with over 70 percent bodies of water among others.

He said currently, Kontagora Emirate has six local government areas, Zuru has four while Borgu has two, hence the agitation for the creation of additional local government areas when the state is created.

He said their demand was genuine for equity, justice and fairness considering the large size of Niger State.

He added that Niger is the only state that has not been split since its creation in 1976 despite the size, saying the proposed state has over 2.4 million population, occupying 47,000 square kilometers out of the current 76,363 square kilometers of Niger State.
