Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has met with traditional leaders and representatives from the Kpaduma and Guzape communities to address concerns over the ongoing road construction and the planned evacuation of affected residents.

The meeting sought to ease tensions as the government moves forward with infrastructure projects aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity in Abuja.

Wike acknowledged the communities’ deep connection to their ancestral lands but emphasised the importance of development for the capital city.

He assured the chiefs of the government’s commitment to fairness, promising compensation for affected structures and the prompt issuance of Rights of Occupancy (R of Os) for resettlement areas, similar to the arrangement with the Gishiri community in Katampe.

“We are not here to displace anyone unjustly. This is about building a better Abuja for all. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and given legal documents for their new homes,” he stated.

The minister clarified that compensation would apply only to structures within the road corridor, not entire communities.

He further directed officials to double the compensation rates to ensure fairness.

“I have told the Director of Resettlement to go and make a valuation. But the rate you people are using is too small. Increase their rate. If they are earning N50, give them N100,” he stressed.

In response, the Sapeyi of Garki, Usman Kupi, who led the delegation of traditional leaders, thanked the minister for his transparency and pledged the communities’ cooperation.

“We are grateful for the minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people. We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress,” Kupi said.

The meeting ended with both sides agreeing to maintain dialogue for a smooth and respectful transition for affected families.

Also in attendance were the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu; the executive secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda and other senior FCT officials.
