Says APC wants Nigeria to become a one-party state
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emma Ogidi, has accused President Bola Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating a plot to weaken and destabilise the opposition PDP.
Ogidi, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Monday night, said the alleged interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) posed a “threat to democracy.”
“It’s not just about our party now, that’s what Nigerians don’t know. It’s a threat to democracy. This APC government, this president we have, he’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that there’s only one party in this country,” he said.
He further blamed President Tinubu for the ongoing turmoil within the PDP, saying, “Tinubu knows what is going on. He’s the one behind it. Wike is his minister, he’s working for him.
“Wike is behind the destruction of our party, all the way. Tinubu is complicit in it. That was the assignment given to him,” he argued.
Ogidi, however, insisted that PDP cannot be destroyed.
“But he cannot destroy our party, the PDP is indestructible. You know why? It’s the people’s party.”
Also, responding to Wike’s claim that no one can expel him from PDP, Ogidi insisted that every member is subject to party rules.
“If you belong to any group, there are rules guiding the group. And once you have been cautioned the first and second time, you are bound to be expelled. You cannot say ‘I cannot be expelled’ when you are misbehaving.
“It’s nobody’s party, It’s the Peoples Democratic Party, let nobody claim that he has more stake than the other. There is a guiding rule, and we all must follow the rule for the party to survive.
“Just like Nigeria, nobody can claim to own Nigeria. President Tinubu cannot claim to own Nigeria,” he added.
Ogidi’s remarks come amid a widening internal crisis within the PDP.
In November, a PDP faction supported by Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed announced the expulsion of Wike and several other party members.
Wike, however, maintained that he will not allow members who joined the PDP after him to force him out of a party he has been associated with since 1998.
In recent months, the party has also witnessed a wave of defections, with many members crossing over to other political parties.
