Wike Vows Crackdown On Illegal Street Racing In Abuja Residential Areas

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to crack down on illegal street racing in residential areas across Abuja, warning that the dangerous practice poses a serious threat to residents and other road users.

Speaking with journalists on Monday after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in the FCT, Wike said while the administration was pleased that the newly constructed roads had improved transportation and attracted admiration, they must not be turned into race tracks by reckless motorists.

The minister expressed concern over reports of organised street racing and dangerous driving within residential neighbourhoods, stressing that the right to use public roads does not extend to activities that endanger lives.

“They are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, but then they forget there are aspects of it that also pose danger to innocent citizens.

“I appeal to them to understand that their rights have limitations, and life is more important,” Wike said.

Although he disclosed that the FCT Administration had yet to receive a formal written complaint identifying specific locations where the illegal races occur, Wike assured residents that the issue would be addressed through the appropriate enforcement agencies.

He said the FCT Traffic Management Department would be directed to step up enforcement and ensure compliance with traffic regulations across the territory.

The minister maintained that high-speed racing would not be tolerated in residential communities, insisting that motorists interested in motorsport activities should confine such events to designated racing facilities or approved non-residential locations.

“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to see that we don’t allow car racing within residential areas. But if it is on the highway, well, that we will not stop,” he said.

Wike added that the FCT Administration would work closely with law enforcement and traffic regulatory agencies to intensify patrols and monitor identified high-risk locations in a bid to curb illegal street racing and improve public safety across the nation’s capital.
