Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has stressed the need for states to maintain a harmonious relationship with the federal government, regardless of political affiliations, saying such cooperation accelerates development at subnational levels.
Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of the 15.13km Ika-Azumini Highway—linking Abia and Rivers States—in the Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Wike applauded Governor Umo Eno for properly utilising the federal government’s subsidy windfall for the benefit of the people.
He noted that the previous subsidy regime had slowed the nation’s development, which justified President Bola Tinubu’s decision to scrap it immediately upon assuming office.
According to Wike, Nigerians have already begun to feel the positive impact, with more funds now being channelled from the federal centre to states.
Recalling his experience as a former governor, Wike said the fuel subsidy was a bitter pill Nigerians had to swallow and that it placed an enormous burden on governors during that era.
He urged Governor Umo Eno to ensure development reaches every part of Akwa Ibom so he can present a strong scorecard in 2027.
“When the time comes, people will ask, ‘Where is your report card?’” he said.
In response, Governor Eno thanked President Tinubu for freeing up funds for the states and pledged to deploy those funds diligently without resorting to external borrowing, ensuring a debt-free transition to his eventual successor in 2031.
“I can tell you that there are funds to do our projects, such as this, without owing the banks, and we are not leaving debts for those who will take over from us.
So, we want to support him. We in Akwa Ibom are united in support of the President. We are united in support of the distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, the uncommon Senate President.”
Chairman of Ika Local Government Area, UtibeAbasi Nwoko, praised the governor for completing the strategic inter-state road, saying it had eased long-standing transportation challenges and strengthened socio-economic ties between Abia and Rivers states.
