Biography
Wizkid grew up in a large, interfaith household in Lagos. His father, Alhaji Muniru Olatunji Balogun is a Sunni Muslim and his mother the late Jane Dolapo Balogun was a devoted Christian. He has numerous female siblings. Wizkid began singing in his church choir at age 11, eventually forming a gospel group called the Glorious Five before pivoting to secular music.

He achieved his major breakthrough in 2010 under Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) with the smash hit single “Holla at Your Boy”. This success led to his debut album, Superstar (2011). He later founded his own record label “Starboy Entertainment” and secured his international position by featuring on Drake’s global anthem “One Dance” in 2016. His 2020 album Made in Lagos and its breakout hit “Essence” (featuring Tems) made history as the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Wizkid’s contributions to Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Music Video in 2021.
