The South-South Professional Women Association International (SSPWAI) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in the political crisis rocking Rivers State, warning that prolonged instability could threaten national economic interests and public safety.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, the association’s national president, Dr. Mrs. Constance Mbang, said the lingering tensions surrounding the Rivers State Government and House of Assembly have heightened political uncertainty in a state critical to Nigeria’s oil production and revenue generation.

Mbang said the group was particularly concerned about the implications of any attempt to disrupt democratic governance in Rivers State, noting that the state hosts a large population of Nigerians and expatriates, as well as major international oil companies whose operations are vital to the national economy.

She stressed that sustained political instability could negatively affect investor confidence and Nigeria’s international image.

The association commended the Rivers State Chief Judge for declining to constitute an impeachment panel, describing the decision as a demonstration of judicial independence and respect for due process.

SSPWAI also questioned the simultaneous targeting of both the governor and his deputy, urging stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and constitutional means in resolving political disagreements.

The women’s group further appealed to the National Assembly to consider assuming the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, arguing that such a step would help stabilise governance and prevent further escalation of the crisis.

According to the association, decisive federal intervention is necessary to restore calm, protect democratic institutions and reassure residents, investors and the international community of the safety and stability of Rivers State.
