National president of Stand-up for Women Society (SWS), Mrs Deborah Ijadele Adetuno, has lauded Borno State governor Babagana Zulum for his administration’s commitment to empowering women, tackling gender-based violence, and domesticating the Child’s Rights Act.

She made the remarks yesterday during the 2024 inauguration of the executive members of the SWS in Borno State and award presentation to deserving personalities in Maiduguri.

She explained that the SWS is a national networking forum created as an umbrella to promote women’s affairs and influence the minds, actions, and practices of the general public at various government levels to support and ensure fair shared responsibilities to women.

The president, who called for more unity among women, urged them to stop blaming men for the impediment of their progress and to see them as partners in progress.

She said it was a misconception for women to continue to think that men are against their progress in life, as being speculated in some quarters, while in reality, the women are the ones working against each other.

“We need to change our attitude and character and support our fellow women in doing good. Men are not our problem; we are our problem, as we always work against each other’s progress.”

She urged members of the Borno State chapter of SWS to live up to expectations by setting standards for others to emulate and cautioned them not to use the opportunity of being members of the society, which stands for the rights of women, to challenge their spouses.

” I must commend Borno State Governor Zulum for his administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment, tackling gender-based violence, and promoting children’s rights,” she further said.

In her remarks, Borno State first lady, Hajiya Falmata Zulum lauded the Society for working for the rights and welfare of women and other vulnerable people.

The ceremony’s highlight was the presentation of awards and goodwill messages from the Federation of Female Lawyers, the National Human Rights Commission, and other organisations promoting women’s empowerment in Borno.
