Leaders of the Ladies Progressive League (LPL) of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church (AVMCC), Ikeja, Lagos, have charged Nigerian mothers to play their role in nation building in order to overcome the challenges facing the nation.
The league which will on Sunday, March 10, 2024 celebrate its 42nd anniversary, said mothers are integral both in the development of the home and in nation building.
The group’s patron, Dr Aku Omokhodion, said the anniversary was a milestone as God has faithfully kept the society. “The society was founded on the premise to: Promote closer fellowship among church members, to participate actively in the evangelical work of the church and to promote love and goodwill among members.”
Also, the president of the society, Mrs Ayodele Ojomu, said in line with its vision, LPL has impacted its members morally and socially to maintain high ethical standards in the church and other aspects of life.
On the challenges the society has encountered, its vice president, Mrs Rita ltua, said as is common with human beings, LPL had its teething period when some of her founding members were discouraged and some members backed out, which reduced the membership strength. “However, today, we are singing a new song,” she added.
She said over the years, funds have been raised to pay the fees of orphans and relief materials donated to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp, Ikotun, Lagos. “Also, we have made visits to old people’s home and rehabilitation centres to donate foodstuffs and groceries.”
Advocating the need for more members, matron of the society, Mrs Adebisi Oduyemi said, “We invite members of the church to join our society. We have spiritual talks to encourage one another and general talks to proffer solutions to individual issues.”
Prince Henry Odukomaiya, Mrs Kofoworola Oduyemi and Mrs Grace Odukomaiya, patron and matrons of LPL respectively, said as the anniversary coincides with Mothering Sunday, they beckoned to all mothers to stand in confident in God -even in this time.
