The Nigeria For Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU) has launched a massive National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment drive targeting over 100,000 women from 6,000 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) across five local government areas of Kebbi State.
The local government areas are Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Yauri, Bunza and Zuru.
Speaking during the launching ceremony held on Thursday evening at Gwadangaji ward of Birnin Kebbi local government area, the state project coordinator, Yakubu Muhammad Yauri, disclosed that the initiative was necessary considering the report from the project data base indicating that over 70 percent of the registered project beneficiaries lacked NIN, one of the requirements for formal banking.
He commended the Kebbi State governor, Nasir Idris, for providing an enabling ground for the project in particular and women in general in Kebbi State.
Also, the head of FWP-SU Partners for NIMC Enrolment of Women in Kebbi State, Mustapha Rabiu Koko, said the NIN registration exercise is a process whereby ward facilitators mobilise all Women Affinity Group members registered as project beneficiaries without NIN, to present themselves for the NIN enrolment being conducted ward by ward, until all the project beneficiaries are enrolled.
He noted that financial inclusion for the women is a process and NIN registration is the first step hence the collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (D4D) project to ensure that all WAG members obtained NIN.
Also, the state NIMC coordinator, Abubakar Balarabe Alhaji, emphasised that the commission is committed to establishing a comprehensive national database, noting that NIN is now the primary gateway for all federal social safety net programmes.
