This year’s World Cup has been serving more than football.

We’ve seen stunning artworks, a mother emotionally interpreting matches for her blind son, and now, a fan who has become a moving tribute to history itself. Meet Michel Kuka Mboladinga, better known as “Lumumba Lives”, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most famous supporter and arguably the tournament’s most unforgettable fan.

Dressed in a suit and standing perfectly still with one arm raised throughout matches, Mboladinga transforms himself into a living statue of Patrice Lumumba, DR Congo’s first prime minister and one of Africa’s most revered independence heroes. “I am a living statue,” he says. “My job is to communicate energy, strength and power to the players.”

The striking pose, which first gained global attention during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has now become one of the World Cup’s most powerful images. As DR Congo makes its long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage after 52 years, Mboladinga is ensuring that every match is also a reminder of the nation’s resilience, pride and history.

In a tournament already filled with memorable moments, this fan’s silent tribute may just be one of its loudest statements yet.
