In a statement released to coincide with the global observance, the Senator praised media professionals in Edo State, Nigeria, and across the world for their dedication to providing accurate and timely information despite facing increasing challenges.

“Journalists are the backbone of democratic accountability,” Senator Imasuen said. “Their work in informing the public and holding those in power to account is indispensable, especially in times when truth is often under threat.”

Acknowledging the rapid evolution of the media landscape, Imasuen noted that while digital technologies and social media have expanded the reach of journalism, they have also created new problems, particularly the proliferation of misinformation. He called on journalists to continue adapting by embracing innovation while upholding the core values of the profession.

“Verification, responsible use of digital tools, and ethical storytelling are more crucial now than ever,” he stated, urging practitioners to remain committed to truth and accountability.

Senator Imasuen also used the occasion to call on government bodies, media proprietors, and civil society organisations to work together to protect press freedoms and ensure that journalists can operate without fear or interference.

“A free and independent press is not optional—it is essential,” he added. “It is our collective duty to nurture a media environment where professionals can thrive and democratic values can flourish.”

He concluded with a message of encouragement, urging media workers to uphold the highest standards of ethics, and to continue contributing to a media ecosystem that educates, empowers, and uplifts society.
